|
Panel 1: Developing Markets: The South African music industry in the international market – A phenomenon in the making
Although the music market component of MOSHITO Music Conference and Exhibition has its inaugural event in 2005, this is a crucial aspect of the South African music industry and it is vital that preliminary steps be taken to ensure a successful market.
Sub-topics to be addressed: Mechanisms for effective export; Exhibitions; What about the Music Export Council?; International Benchmarks: The MIDEM Experience; The Irish Music Industry
Speakers: Ivor Haarburger (Johnnic Communications), Paul Barbaro (MIDEM), Greg Maloka (Y FM), Tale Motsepe (DAC), Keith Donald (Ireland's IMRO – Performing Rights & MCPSI - Mechanical Rights), Jean Francois Michel (European Music Office, Brussels and Bureau Export de la Musique Francaise)
|
Panel 2: Developing Markets: Digital Exploitation of music in a globalizing environment
Technology is playing a critical role in the way music is composed, recorded, distributed and consumed at a pace that means that the industry has to constantly evaluate itself. Are the technological developments creating opportunities or are they a threat to our industry?
Sub-topics to be addressed: Music Usage tracking & unique identification mechanisms; Ringtones and their economic value; On-line music sales; Digital archiving and storage
Speakers: Alan Johnston (SAMRO), Charles Kühn (Gallo), Jeremy Fabinyi (CISAC), Rodney Ishikowitz (Core Group)
|
| Session 2: 11H00 – 12H30 |
|
Panel 3: Music Piracy: Combating Music Piracy…Everybody Jump!
Music piracy continues to prove a huge obstacle to the full development of the global music industry. No longer confined to the illegal replication of artist's music on CD and cassettes, the 21st century piracy threat also comes from illegal downloads via the internet, and other new technology-driven ways of illegally owning and selling music.
Sub-Topics to be addressed: Is introducing the banderol system the answer?; The blank tape levy: some considerations; Digital Piracy; Current efforts in combating piracy in South Africa
Speakers: Owen Dean (Spoor & Fisher); Dave Alexander (Sheer Publishing); Braam Schoeman (RISA); Faizel Dajee (Reliable Records); Richard Rademan (IFPI); Corne Guldenpfennig (Ster Kinekor)
|
Panel 4: Social Welfare: Social security, substance abuse & other pressing issues facing SA musicians
One of the recommendations of the Music Industry Task Team (MITT) was that the DAC "work with relevant insurance institutions to pursue the best mechanisms to fund and administer social security within the entertainment industry, in collaboration with MUSA and ASAMI (now RISA)". But how do we create a social welfare system for SA musicians?
Sub-topics to be addressed: The status of the musician: The ILO classification; Current initiatives: Towards a sensible social security programme; Addressing the substance abuse challenge; Exploring ways of dealing with the HIV/AIDS reality
Speakers: Zwelakhe Mbiba (DAC), Oupa Lebogo (MUSA), Richard Mokoena (People's Bank); Jabu Hlongwane (Old Mutual); Jeanine Lewin (MAAPSA), Angela Stewart-Buchanan (Love Life)
|
| Session 3: 13H30 – 15H00 |
|
Panel 5: Education and Training: Capacity Building in the SA music industry
Capacity building is key to the strengthening of the South African economy as a whole – and the music industry needs to urgently look at ways of building capacity across the full range of activities within this sector.
Sub-topics to be addressed: The contribution of the Standards Generating Body (SGB); Progress made by Create SA; Are the current interventions adequate?
Speakers include: Chats Devroop ( University of Pretoria ), Garth Farrant (Performing Arts Campus)' Rod Harrod (Prompt), Caiphus Semenya (Creative Collective)
|
Panel 6: Developing Markets: The role of Jazz Appreciation Societies in the development of SA jazz
Over the past decade South African jazz has become a force to be reckoned with – both on the recorded and live fronts – and the development of jazz music in SA is assisted by the many jazz appreciation societies that exist in the country.
Sub-topics to be addressed: The consumers & their role; Jazz festivals
Speakers: Representatives from SA National Jazz Foundation, Tshwane Jazz Collectors' Organisation and SA Federation of Jazz Societies, Mesh Mapetla (Deejay & promoter), Mfanelo Jacobs (Gauteng Music Foundation), McCoy Mrubata (A local top jazz musician and composer)
|
| Session 4: 15H30 – 17H00 |
|
Panel 7: Developing Markets: The media's role in strengthening, extending and nurturing the homegrown music industry
The media plays a crucial role in the development of the South African music industry – through exposure of artists in print and other feature-related media, but most especially by way of the broadcast media.
Sub-topics to be addressed: Local content in electronic media; Image building; Patriotic obligations versus revenue boosting sensationalism; International benchmarks
Speakers include: Pfananni Lishivha (ICASA); Karl Gostner (Y FM); Harvey Roberts (Bula Music); Diane Coetzer (SA correspondent, Billboard); Charlene Deacon (KAYA FM)
|
Panel 8: Developing Markets: The role of live music in the development of the SA music industry
Playing live is the one way that most artists are able to earn a decent living. However, South African promoters and musicians are firm in their belief that the live music element of the SA music industry can be dramatically improved to ensure its continued survival and vibrancy.
Sub-topics to be addressed: Government incentives for live venues; Audience development
Speakers: Peter Tladi (SAMPA), Rose Katz (MIDI Trust); Sipho Mabuse (Kippies' Jazz International); Damon Forbes (Sheer Sounds); Ringo Madlingozi (musician); Hazel Feldman (Showtime)
